Nervous (Real name: Naki Kawai) is the second prisoner who went under trial in the first MILGRAM novel. Her book of sin is called "Sin Of Retaliation".

Character Description[]

A girl who's all sunshine and happiness, and is great at keeping a positive mood. She's very social with all the prisoners and Es.

Appearance[]

She appears to have many scars on her forearms, she believes this is because she may have hurt herself in her past. She has long black hair which is kept away from her face with clips, and large round glasses

Personality[]

A social prisoner who seems to admire Es. In spite of appearing bubbly within the prison, she started off suffering from self-harming tendencies and anxiety. She felt as if she has to be 'useful' to people, causing her to suppress her personality and stay quiet out of fear of burdening others. As she starts to meet Es, however, her stress alleviates and she's able to be friendly with others. She has a strong sense of justice and faith in her morals, and believes that it is okay for her to punish others when the law can not.

She also is revealed to be a picky eater, but will eat whatever Es makes for her.

History[]

Naki grew up with "overly loving parents that spoiled her", and was sheltered in her childhood. This sheltering from her parents caused her to lack social skills with her classmates. Naki was used to being used by others and felt like she had to please them if she wanted to be accepted. This would stress her out up until the point of self-harm. A lot of people were insensitive, either letting her cut herself or forcing her to stop. But then she had met Sumi, her senior. Sumi asked Naki what was wrong, and Naki finally had the chance to talk about her issues. Naki and Sumi soon became close friends and would talk often. After befriending Sumi, she was able to let go of her anxiety and interact with other people normally. She also stopped her self-harming. As time went by and Naki's middle school life got better, she began to fall in love with Sumi.

When Sumi graduated at broke contact with Nervous, she fell into depression. The one person she really loved was gone, and now she had no way of relieving her stress but to cut herself. However, she was caught by another boy who reached out to help her, going by the alias Shitenshi. Naki learned that he went to the same school as Sumi and would ask him how she's doing. The two became friends, and Naki was glad to have someone who cared so much about her again even if he couldn't replace Sumi.

One day, Naki got a message from Sumi's friend Aiba saying that Sumi had died. Naki was devastated. But things only got worse when she learned that it was "Shitenshi" (who was actually Shin) who caused her death. Naki resents Shin for his obsession causing her death as well as his imitation of her behaviour. She arranged to meet him again, and violently stabbed him.

Etymology[]

  • Kawai means "river" (河) (kawa), "well, crib, town" (井) (i)
  • Naki means "Nara, what" (奈) (na), "beg, rare, Greece" (希) (ki)
